Pupil Premium

Harry Roberts Nursery School -  Early Years Pupil Premium- Report Autumn 2020
 
Money is allocated nationally for Early Years Pupil Premium (EYPP) funding for eligible 3-4 year olds. This means schools will be allocated an extra £302 per year for each child who is eligible – looked after children, adopted children, special guardianship children, children subject to a child arrangement order and those children in families where the joint income is below £16.190 per year will be able to claim the EYPP including those families in receipt of:
  • Income Support
  • Income-based Jobseekers Allowance.
  • Income-related Employment and Support Allowance.
  • Support under Part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999.
  • Guaranteed element of State Pension Credit.
  • Child Tax Credit.
  • Working Tax Credit

Barriers and Challenges

​The main barriers to learning that our pupil premium children face include speech and language difficulties and lack of wider enrichment experiences due to financial difficulties. These barriers can affect their wellbeing.  Each half term we review the children who are in receipt of the premium and ensure we are supporting their specific learning needs and offering them challenge with additional experiences.
 
How we use Pupil Premium funding

Below are details of the provisions, purpose, costing and outcomes for children and families. The head and deputy head teacher review the provision termly and monitor progress, attainment and ensure continued challenge. Staff are expected to be aware of the pupil premium children in their teams and to ensure they are fully accessing experiences. In previous cohorts of children we have found the effect of the expenditure provided for these children has been highly effective due to the nature of the way we allocate the money. Provisions are chosen based on individual need: sometimes children have similar needs but we look at provision on a child by child basis. Our EYPP children work alongside other children with their additional experiences and we are pleased that in the past two years that all children, irrespective of their EYPP status, have made rapid and sustained progress.

We use this funding in a variety of ways to impact on the learning of this group of children and overcome the barriers identified. The funding is used for: embedded Forest School provision, growing vegetables and cooking, local trips, for example to local shops and museums, language groups, gardening, looking after birds and other garden creatures, and taking part in yoga sessions, as well as part funding some wonderful enrichment experiences such as the visiting footballers, and regular engagement with Stepney City Farm. We have also bought resources for the language groups (Attention Bucket resources) and made resources for specific interventions such as Colourful Semantics.

In the past we have bought additional speech therapy support, had a weekly music teacher, been swimming and provided theatre experiences. As we can no longer subsidise the pupil premium in the same way, these have stopped.
However because the speech therapist supported and trained the staff, the good practice in this area will continue as will the practice developed as a result of providing Continued Professional Development such as the THAMES (Tower Hamlets Music Education Service) courses on Dance, Music and Art, in order for staff to develop their expertise and lead on this aspect of our work, embedding it in our practice.
 
Impact and Outcomes

Year on year, our leavers' data demonstrates children in receipt of EYPP funding make rapid and sustained progress.  

So for 2019-2020, the Pupil Premium children's attainment was better than the children who are not eligible in all aspects with some very marked differences as in the aspects of Communication and Language for example. So in Listening and Attention 70% of the Pupil Premium children were at or above the expected level for their age compared to 46% of the non Pupil Premium children. This is a pattern we have found before and the interventions made for Pupil Premium children are having an impact.

An ongoing concern is for the large number of our families who, are far from affluent but who just miss out on pupil premium, whose children are financially disadvantaged and who also require additional support. We consider every child as an individual and support their needs but obviously we do not receive pupil premium funding for this group. Some may actually be more disadvantaged.
