Developing an understanding of pattern is an important part of both mathematical learning and creative learning. Here we have been making alternating patterns (sometimes known as abab patterns) using two different colours on the pegboard. It takes 10 pegs to fill a row so children are also developing an understanding of 10 as they work. Pegs are small and need good fine motor skills. The children have to use these skills to pick them up and then place them in the holes. This is helping strengthen the pincer grip that is necessary when using many tools including using pens and pencils for writing.
