At this time of year the leaves are changing colour and falling from the trees. The children are often fascinated by the leaves they find in the garden and like to collect them. Creating an autumn bouquet can be very satisfying. The children can notice the varied colours and shapes of the leaves they find and match them to the trees they come from. They can also start to use words like "pointed" and "crunchy". This kind of activity can look simple but it offers opportunities for learning in Mathematics, Communication and Language, Personal Social and Emotional Development and Expressive Arts and Design. It also involves physical skills particularly the fine motor skills needed to pick up leaves and hold the bunch together.
